making nparticle rain drops not perfectly round?

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to make some slow motion rain drops. I have an nparticle system with a vray water material applied. so I have these perfectly smooth spheres falling, but it seems like there should be a good way to get these spheres to kind of warble around a bit more as blobs of water then perfect spheres. Any ideas as to how to accomplish this?

I tried creating a sphere geometry with a turbulent deformer lattice but the particle system doesn't seem to want to use it with the deformer it just uses the sphere.
