Try to find pictures of the helmet. FRONT view, SIDE view etc..., it is the same helmet used in World War 2 & Korea, the one in Vietnam had a CAMO cover, get ALL of the reference pics you can find, here is a good site for stuff from Vietnam:
https://www.vietnamgear.com/kit.aspx?kit=25, you are looking for the M1 Helmet. Google it.
Another thing you can do is, make or get a model of a human head, and use it as reference to model the helmet on it.

Use a polygon and extrude edges or start with a box and shape, cut edges etc. use NURBS, there many ways of modeling this helmet.
I googled this for you:

The guy is modeling a Roman helmet, but this should give you great way of doing an M1 Helmet.

Its looking good, but you need a curve at the bottom of the helmet, look at the picture I have attached.
About your render, change the background environment, don't use black, use a light tan or semi-white, very light grey, just avoid black.
Add a basic three point light system:
Key Light (this will be your main light)
Fill light & a backlight
Check this tutorial for a 3 point light setup:

Add some noise, and or a bump map to your material, look at this picture:
See the grainy texture on the surface, try to recreate that surface.
Another thing you need to fix is the lip around the bottom of your helmet, it is too flat, look at the pictures fro the correct shape of the bottom lip around the helmet.

Try anti-aliasing the renders.

Go to your render settings and under the Maya Software (if that's what you're rendering it in) tab, change it to Production Settings.
