Try popping in a filename to write to in the FG options and then do a render but a really small one, try the smallest render size in the render view menu options. This will create and write your FG data and it will be quicker than full-size. then select the 'freeze' option in the FG menu in order to use the FG file if you are using maya 2008 and then set the render back to full size and render. That's what I've been doing, hopefully it will speed things up.
