Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Animating Color Materials...

hi there.. i am wanting to know how you can animate material colors in maya? for instance i have a polygon that is colored blue and between frame 0 and frame 50 i have 2 faces selected on that polygon that i want to go from the color blue to the color yellow while the remaining faces of the polygon maintain their blue color. when i try to do this it doesnt work, it just saves the last color to all the frames.

how would i acheive this? thanks for your time...

you have to do one of two things....

1) you can create a brand new texture for the two faces, and animate as before .

2) if you only want to do one texture, you're going to have to map whatever it is, then create a succesion of frames from yellow to blue in the desired area. Then you have to go back into maya and use the 'movie' texture (which is a little misleading, cause it only takes still frames).

Seems most probable that you'd be best served using the first one. anybody else know a different method?

well i tried creating a ramp for the faces of the polygon that i chose and tried to animate this via keyframes but this didnt work either. How do you animate textures?

lambert->color->ramp.. then what? simply creating a ramp then assigned a color scheme to it and assigned a different color for a different timeframe does not work either. the first option is definitely more doable(so would seem)... thanks Xander and if you can think of anything else i would appreciate it or anyone else that wants to chime in.. user added image

sorry, I was just talking about the basic premise for the setup. There probably is a way, but after thinking it over, I don't really know what it is. but this metod works.
right click on your object (or for just the two faces), and 'material'>'new material'>'layered shader'. Then, using the hypershader, create two random materials (whatever it was before that you were using, as in phong or blinn, or whatever). With the hypershader still opened, navigate in the attribute editor until you get the layered shader again. it looks a little bit different than the interfaces for the other textures. Now, middle-mouse drag the other two textures you created into the part of the layered shader window that says 'layered shader attributes' - there should be one block already in that portion (in mine its green). When you drag the other two textures in, they'll create two more blocks, just they should be blue, with a dot in the middle. Hit the x below the first box to get rid of it. Then, to animate the change, simply change the alpha setting on the upper texture (as you would key just about anything). I don't know if it'll make an exact transistion like a ramp between to colors would, but it'll work.
Note here - the nice thing about using two different textures like this, is you can do things like make one layer shiny, and the other not shiny.
If you have any other problems, I know maya has a little tutorial on layered shaders imbedded in the help files. A quick look through there will find it.
that help?
