Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

'Rigid' joints?

Hi there,

Currently in the process of creating a rig but the joints on the arms aren't behaving exactly how I want them.

user added image

As you see, they're quite bendy but I would like it to be a rigid bend, as I (tried) to show on the image. I understand it would be to do with painting on skin weights?

Any help on this would be appreciated user added image

Thanks,
Tom

(EDIT: I believe this is the right section, sorry if that's not the case)

You can try doing a rigid bind instead of a smooth bind. A rigid bind will have a vertex influenced by only one joint.

err paint the weights to get what you want. Or if you do a rigid bind you'll need to put a flexor in there

You could also use smooth binding, but go into the smooth binding options, and set Max Influences to 1.

Hey!

So, Rigid binding works pretty well so thanks for that!

One last thing, not sure how to explain it but at as the bend happens, it seems to 'go in' on its self?
