Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character
since it looks like a cylinder from your picture, you could do a Cylindrical UV Projection. Select your shape, go to Edit Polygons > Texture > Cylindrical UV Map. Use the manipulator to stretch the cylindrical gizmo around the entire object.
