UV mapping issue

I am having a problem projecting an image onto a plane. Here are the steps I am taking and what is being produced.

I first select my plane object.
I then create uv's using the automatic method.
I export the snapshot, and create my texture in photoshop.
I then create a new phong texture and place the image file from photoshop in the color section of the new phong.

I select my plane object and apply the texture.
When I look at my uv texture editor the image does not correspond. Maya projects the image perpendicular to my plane.
Why does it not match up? Why does it not project down onto the face of the plane automatically?

The image does not show up in the uv texture editor like it should, its perpendicular and the scale is off. i dont understand how this happens.

While in Photoshop, you didn't resize or rotate the image?
