Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Automap 2014 vs 2009

Hello all,

i face an issue with automatic mapping while trying Maya2014 compare to Maya 2009.

In Maya2009 : if i create a polluCube 1.1.1 >> scale it 30.20.1 >> apply automatic mapping = i will get some UV set that follow the real visible shape of my polyCube.
Mean 2 faces large rectangular + 4 faces think rectangular stripes

NOW same in Maya2014

if i create a polluCube 1.1.1 >> scale it 30.20.1 >> apply automatic mapping = i get a totally wrong (for my purpose) UV Set >> all face perfect Square 1.1.1 ...stretching my texture a way i don't want!

Now same poly >> "freeze transformation" >> my scale datas turn to 1.1.1 (while shape is not changing) >> apply automatic mapping = Then it's ok and i have good UV set matching the real shape.

But the point is that i really do not want to freeze this poly! I need those scale dimensions

( Also i saw that if i create a polyCube input 30.20.1 (scale 1.1.1) >> then it is also OK with the UV...but i don't want either to work with input because i will lost it at first history cleaning )

Below pics :
> For same polyCube 1.1.1 / Scale 30.20.1 (average) >> automap in Maya2009 and 2014 .....

Do you have to automatic map? Planar mapping is cleaner and gives you more control in most cases... just sayin'

yes that was ideal for me...purpose is to model kitchen furniture...so basically a bunch of planks. So in one click i could auto map each planks.

Hi,

I found out, that when you scale up an object and then you do an automatic mapping this will show you the faces in that matter. If you are doing a freeze transformation before you do an automatic mapping, this will show you then the faces in the right manner. Give it a try.

Yes,thanks this is what i already noticed and explained...and that is different from 2009.
But in my process i really would like to keep those scale infos and would prefer not to freeze the tranformation.

It is a bug of Maya 2014. Hope it will be fixed in a future hot fix or release. You have to live with this until then.
