Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Loft Problem

Hi masters,

I'm smoking my brains out because i can't loft these two curves that i imported from Illustrator.. Is that possible at all? but if i type the text inside maya nurbs and loft it's not problem at all. Just questioning why i can loft the curves from illustrator.

Thank you

For a loft to work properly there are a few things you need to make sure. First the seams must line up (pic attached). Secondly the number of CVs on both curves should be fairly similar or you will get a screwed result. You can rebuild the curves with a fixed number of cv's to remedy the second problem (if necessary). First try to align the seams.

Have you tried simply using maya's text tool then bevel plus to make the surface?

Try Planar instead of a loft.....it worked for me when my lofts turn out all funny sometimes....although I would use the option box to tweak the looks

Oh right, sorry, I assumed the curves were closed but the error message states otherwise. You can use Edit Curves -> open / close with blend or insert knot. You can use the text & bevel plus tool if it is just text, but if you have other stuff too you'd be better off learning how to deal with them.

Hi all,

Saiyan: i did try planar but i can't get the bevel that i wanted originally from the curves placement

NitroLiq: i try the maya text tool, but don't have the same font as the character of the curves even though the tools works great =(

fredriksson : i'll give it a try...

Thank you all

Ok, you're going to need to jump through a few hoops to get this to work.

You'll first need to cut the 2 curves up at the 4 hard corners of each curve.

(Note: this was for display, don't move the curves apart like this.)

As previously mentioned, one of your curve's seem is in the middle of the large arch of the "C." When you cut your curves like this, the seem will cause the outer curve to be divided in half. Attach it together to form the one curve using the "connect" option rather than blend so as not to change the shape.

Next, rebuild each individual curves so that they match. For example, the large round outer curve when I did it was 10 spans. Rebuild its counterpart curve to be 10 spans and with the following settings:

(Note that the number "10" in this case is an example. Your numbers may vary.)

You can determine how many spans your curves have by looking in the Attribute Editor while one is selected. When comparing, you always want to rebuild BOTH curves to match the higher number of the 2. (Even rebuild the one who's numbers you're matching to get rid of inefficiency caused by the curve detachment.)

The small curves making up the ends of the C were both 1 span, but still rebuild them to be 1 span with the above options so as to clean the mathmatics behind the curves to result in clean geometry.

Etc.

Once your curves all match each other and are rebuilt, you can loft between the different sections. Once you have all your lofts, you can attach them together using the "connect" option rather than Blend to keep the sharp corners.

Enjoy.
