yeah, you want Keep Faces Together and you'll also need to click that little blue circle to switch from Local to Global control.

Yes make sure you have keep face togher selected in polygon option box. When you extrude a edge most of the time its a good idea to hit the little blue circle which will center your arrows for pulling all in the same direction.
