Split polygon, tutorial

I watched the "basic split polygon" tutorial, as im learning maya.. :p

I watched the whole movie and thaught that wasn't to hard, but when i started to do the same thing, a problem appeared.

I saw that he could click [b]in[b] the polygon with the split polygon tool. But i cant do that?!

Here's a picture, so you can understand what im jiddering about. I wan't to do this:

Create a polygon cube
Select the split polygon tool
click and hold the mouse button down whilst over your first edge. When your happy with the position release your mouse button.

Do the same over an adjacent edge and press enter when complete.

You should now see a line across the 2 point you put on the cube.

I'm not sure, but I think there's a Snap to lines or something like that checkbox in the tool options...
