Completed House

Hi All,

I just wanted to share my house with you. Next onto the texturing when that gets released by Dave user added image

Some aspects were a little challenging, especially lining up the tiles for the corners of the roofs. one issue i did come across what when creating the masks for the roofs (hence i haven't applied them yet.

positioning the camera in the viewport and rendering a 4k image at 3840 x 2160, taking that into photoshop CC for the house was fine athough when opening in photoshop its telling me that the image is 3550 x 1805.

When rendering the masks they seem to be a little off also, even though all the settings are the same, i have to resize the X in photoshop otherwise the mask was slightly to the right.

Anyways, i have loved following along with these tutorials and with the skills learnt, i now have the confidence to follow my (Autistic license) loluser added image

I definitely like the style/structure of this house better than the Victorian,
and will be giving this tut a try very soon.
Already see a few changes I'd make in my own model, but that's what artistic license is all about right? user added image

if Dave could do a tutorial on maybe setting up the AO render layers because its a little confusing knowing when to add shaders and when to add them to the layer or vice versa.


Does anyone have a process for creating a AO render using layers as Dave explained in his tutorials for the house? I am having issues understanding what goes where and when.

i mean when do you apply the surface shader to the item or do you only apply them once they are in the new layer? and if you haave say applied a white surface shader to something on once layer and a black shader on another layer how does that work? when you clkick on each renderLayer does it swap out the textures that should be on each item?

when you create a new render layer, if you right click on that layer you get the option to create a material override for that layer. this is where you would assign your ao shader (surface shader etc...). this material override only exists for that specific layer. so if you want to set up a layer to render AO..... you would select all your objects that you wanted to have AO, create the new render layer, then assign the material override to that layer (the material being your AO material).

if you click render, you will get a render of whatever render layer you currently have selected. so if you are on your render layer with the AO material on, and you hit render, you will get your AO render. If you were back on say, the master layer, without the material override, you will get the default scene layer, with whatever default materials you have set.

so yes, you apply the new shader once you have created the new render layer. And depending on what layer you have selected, you will render only the materials that are applied for that layer. If you have assigned your material overrides correctly for each layer, Maya is clever, and will know, depending on what layer you have selected, which materials to render.
