Cylindrical Barrel shape has hard edges

Hi, Im modelling a metal barrel and the problem is that half of it has hard edges which Im assuming is the result of the top and bottom caps. I don't know how to fix it however. I highlighted the faces which have sharp edges in the screenshot:

Try softening edge in the normal drop down menu or harden, whichever fits the look you're going for.

There seems to be a problem with that as it only softens selected edges, so I was only able to apply it to two or three of the hard edges :/ For the rest it simply doesn't do anything.

Try unlocking the normal first then do a soften edge.............dave
