If one average size man is supposed to fit inside the ball, then the scale of the model is way off. It looks like a miniature. Some reference objects would help (like undseth mentioned). Also, reducing the scale of the dirt and grime would really help. At the moment, the grime looks like small clumps of dirt.

Overall, nice model. Looking forward to seeing more progress on this.

You're right...i'll decrease the texture scale...looks more like brass tubes freshly welded

Isn't the waves's size a good reference for the overall scale?

To answer your previous question, Undseth, i picked up an exemple of ocean shader (maya 4.5 ULTD), then tried to find where i could change the sky color, finally i found it...that's all.

The waves could work, but I think the texture scale is the main problem here. Once that is adjusted, things should start looking right. More details on the ship -- railing, panel lines, rivets, other small things -- will help to define the scale.

perpetual question

For the moment, the ship is made of nurbs objects that are grouped but not welded. Is this the way to go or theses objects must be welded ?
Can't figure out welding them together.

interesting image with all these steam boats - i'd like to see more - I'd like details that tell me something about the world we're in and what these little boats are for, what kind of creatures/characters drive them... it's starting to get interesting user added image you can take it further!
