Skin Weighting Problems...

I am extremely new at this so bear with me. xD

I'm modelling a character, and so far I've successfully weighted the feet, legs, hands and fingers, head and eyes without a hitch. But my torso and arms (which are just one shape) have been giving me difficulties.
I find that whenever I attempt to weight certain areas of the shape that other areas of it become affected. It'll randomly bulge or cave in, but will remain black in terms of the joint I'm currently working on. I'm completely bewildered as to what to do about it. :/ Anybody ever encountered this?

And if anyone wants a screenshot I can try and get one up.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.
