Simply do the following:
For every object you want to make a reference, turn on "Enable Overrides" under Drawing Overrides in the attribute editor.
Now, either use utility nodes or a set driven key, and set the object's overrideDisplayType to 2 for reference, 0 for normal, when you switch your control. Just so you know, most rigs hide the objects instead of referencing them, as you can't do anything with them anyways, so it just clutters up the scene.
Imagination is more important than knowledge.
