instancing animation

need help on instancing animated characters (swimming fish) to dummy objects.

I did a crowd animation. it´s a 200 obj swarm of cones which are keyframed every 10 frames. I now would need to replace the cones with my animated fish like I´d do with particles using Instance (Replacement).

any help much appreciated!

everything starts and ends in the right place at the right time.
