This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Maya FAQ tutorial beta 2

After months of tinkering around with stuff, the 2nd beta of the Maya FAQ tutorial is here! This is geared towards beginners of Maya that are learning Maya, but run into problems.

Here's what's covered in this video:
•Manipulator tool size (+/-)
•Merge verts
•7.0-8.0 menu set differences
•Turning on/off plug-ins
•Interactive Creation
•Shelf customization
•Clipping Plane
•Construction History

There's only one thing I'm planning to add to the final video:
•Booleans disappear

You can download it here.

I haven't seen it but here are a few things I'd add:
*Deleting history and freezing transformations
*Extrude>Keep faces together on/off
*Retain object spacing in move tool
*Reversing normals

Benny

When in doubt, delete history and freeze transformations.

I don't know, I've never heard of it happening. I can't reproduce it, so I'm not gonna be able to cover it.

OK, I got some more time to record another beta. It's the same link as the one above, so you can just download it there. BennyK, I've decided that I'm going to put a couple of those recommendations into the next video I make ("Maya Tips").

Um… I don't know. I wouldn't mind that, I was just uploading them for my site.

Well, I'm gonna try to record the final video tomorrow. I can't find much time to record these (cause I have to wait till everyone's out of the house lol). I'm thinking about not doing the booleans part, cause I tried digging up an old geo and messing around with that, but I forgot how I screwed them up in the past.

are you like me and you cant do stuff that would attract interrogation because it would interrupt the flow of awesomeness?

the whole booleans thing seems pretty random... move one vertex slightly and it suddenly works, or it suddenly breaks.

did you try deforming a piece well beyond what it originally was and try unioning it to something with gaps between the two pieces?

No, it's just that my parents are awkward and not the quietest people around. lol

Yeah… but my technique of fixing it didn't work (Mesh>Cleanup).
