Particle emitter emitting custom shape?

Hi, I want to create a heaping pile of objects using and emitter because placing them and having them fall on the floor manually is tedious and chokes maya. I was thinking about having an emitter emit the shapes. What is the best way to do it? Maya Dynamics has an mesh instancing option but no obvious way to link it to a mesh. I haven't found the nParticle menu, and the help online simply says you can instance nparticles but doesn't say how, and bifrost doesn't have any option that I can see.
