Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Animation Methods?

I've had this question for a while: Is there an alternative way of animating other than using joints?
I've seen this in alot of Rigs, and it looks like they simply have curves around their feet/hands rather than
any visual skeleton, How is this done? I'd love to know user added image

They probably just have the joints hidden.

The curves are handles, the bones are hidden but are still very much at work.

You could use a bunch of deformers, like bend or cluster deformers... but that's probably not what you're seeing with those control systems as Gen and Dom said.
