shadows in perspective view

no matter what i do...i cannot get the shadows from point lights (or any lights for that matter) to show up in the perspective view. another problem is that i cannot get the special effect glow to show up in perspective view (i dont know if it does anyway).

hardware texturing is on...shadow maps have been enabled...shadows are checked under the lighting panel...

the thing is that when i try to see shadows at the computer lab at my school...they work...but not at home and i have a decently powerful video card (7800 GT)

i havent tested the "glow" at the lab...but if anything is wrong...it has to be my video hardware...and i CANT be the only person having the problem

one thing is that my computer lab is macs and i have windows...idk if that means anything important...but i know macs are recommended for multimedia use

finally im using Maya 7.0.1 and the shadows work in IMAGE RENDER
